The historical mystery series your patron is looking for may be the Sister
Fidelma series by Peter Tremayne. Titles include Absolution by Murder,
Shroud for the Archbishop, Suffer Little Children, The Subtle Serpent, The
Spider's Web, Valley of the Shadow, Hemlock at Vespers, and the Monk Who
Vanished. The only difference between your description and the books are
that they are set in 7th century Ireland, not the 1600's. The detective is a
female, a nun, and and advocate (read attorney) for the Irish court system.

Of course, I could not remember either the author's name nor any of the
titles to save my life, without running to the shelves, and I've just
recently completed reading the series! Another senior moment! It was an
outstanding series, by the way.

Hi all,
A Big Thank You to Victoria Swadley and Laura
McCaffery for you answer. You were both right: the
patron was looking for Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma
series set in Ireland in the seventh century.

The patron originally gave me the wrong century and I
also had a senior moment.
