I am looking to compile a list of books featuring librarians, especailly
in romances. Any other genres are okay, as are any time or place. So far
the only book that I have thought of is Lirael, the YA novel from 2001, by
Garth Nix. I prefer books that have librarians as a major character, and
they can be either a positive or negative view of librarians. Ya novels
are okay, but adult novels are better.
Thanks in advance! I know that I will get some good suggestions from this
list.

This question has been through Stumpers a couple of times before, and a
quick check of the Archives reveals about fifty relevant postings (and a
number of not-so) under "Librarians in fiction" or "Librarians in
literature." There was even some vague thought about someone trying
to gather all the suggestions together into a publishable article or
website, but I don't think that ever happened.
Anyway, if you search the Archives under keywords <librarians fiction>
most of the relevant results should be obvious from their headers.
There are also references to libraries/librarians in movies etc.

a number of compiled (by librarians) lists out

Also, as always, there IS a BOOK: Librarians
in Fiction: A Critical Bibliography, by Grant
Burns (1998)
Here's a description -
The depictions of librarians in 374 novels, short
stories, and plays in English are the focus of
this fully annotated reference work. Librarians,
no less than others, want to read about
themselves and know how they are thought of. The
stereotypical or fictional librarian-the one with
the bun, comfortable shoes, and dour demeanor-may
be fading, but fiction teaches a lesson about
public perception: Actually, librarians in
stories are often described as adaptable,
knowledgeable, shrewd, tactful, tender and
intelligent. All entries include complete
bibliographic data, followed by a lengthy
annotation that discusses how the librarian fits
into the story and gives insight to how he or she
is depicted. Title and author indexes are
provided for further utility.

"In 'In the Stacks', noted librarian Michael Cart has assembled the cream
of twentieth century short fiction about libraries and librarians. They
range from such classics as Isaac Babel's "The Public Library" to Jorge
Luis Borges's tale about a library stretching into infinity ("The Library
of Babel"), to such contemporary masters as Ray Bradbury ("Exchange"),
Alice Munro ("Hard Luck Stories"), Francine Prose ("Rubber Life"), Nikki
Giovanni ("The Library"), and others."
* * * * *
The "Jordan Poteet" series of mysteries by Jeff Abbott feature a
small-town Texas librarian as the main character. The series titles,
according to Bookbrowser, are:
1 - Do Unto Others (1994)
2 - The Only Good Yankee (1995)
3 - Promises of Home (1996)
4 - Distant Blood (1996)
I particularly like the fact that the librarian is MALE. Shatter those
stereotypes! (grin)
You may also want to check out Bookbrowser's lists of sleuths by
occupation. There are several other mystery series, including the
ever-popular Miss Zukas, listed at
http://www.bookbrowser.com/Sleuths/Librarian.html
* * * * *
And it's hard to believe that no one's mentioned "The Name of the Rose".
I'll grant that the librarian in that book isn't a very sympathetic
character, though.

I deleted the question before I thought of this so hope it fits. Charles
A. Goodrum wrote a series of mysteries (e.g.Dewey Decimated) set in a
library. Ours have been withdrawn (1970's) so I can't check them. He has
also written NF about the Library of Congress.

I know that I will get some good suggestions from this
list.

At least two of Cathie Linz's humorous contemporary romances have
librarian heroines (who have pretty-much on-the-mark librarian concerns
- and who do pretty well in the love interest aspect, too)
In BETWEEN THE COVERS, readers' advisory librarian Paige Turner is the
heroine - I think it's set in a suburban Chicago library - Linz
interviewed fiction_l's own Joyce Saricks for this one......
The heroine in BRIDAL BLUES is the librarian in a small Central Illinois
town - and those of us who have worked in Central Illinois can't figure
out what town it is!

Subject: Re: Librarians as characters: a query and an addition
A co-worker is almost positive that the short story you were asking
about, featuring a librarian searching for a book that was a portal to
Atlantis, is called "No Forwarding Address" by L. Sprague de Camp and
Fletcher Pratt. The story can be found in the book "Tales From
Gavagan's Bar." Hope this is the right one.

I received an e-mail from Cathie Linz regarding her librarian heroines
in which she wrote "Another is Anastasia Knight who is a children's
librarian in TOO SMART FOR MARRIAGE (Harl. Love and Laughter 1998)"
That, for some reason reminded me of Tom and Sharon Curtis' beloved
Loveswept of 1983, LIGHTNING THAT LINGERS, in which the heroine is a
children's librarian in a small Wisconsin town and the hero is a
biologist/male stripper. The strip joint, the Cougar Club, is probably
modeled after the Sugar Shack, which used to be in Lake Geneva (or maybe
still is) since the Curtises are Wisconsinites.
A Silhoutte from 2000, MAIL-ORDER CINDERELLA by Kathryn Jensen, has a
children's librarian as the heroine selected by a thoroughly modern
Western hero through a dating service.
Then, too, Anne McCaffrey has two librarian heroines that I know of. In
RESTOREE, a space gothic, a 1960's New England librarian finds herself
using her hard-won librarian's knowledge to help save another planet
from the aliens who tried to "harvest" her - and finding her lifemate in
the process. In STITCH IN SNOW, a contemporary PhD librarian /
children's author finds romance and suspense while on a grueling author
/ lecture tour of the U.S.
