A patron remembers a (true) story about a post WWII bombing experiment
that ended badly. It was kept quiet for awhile, but eventually the word
got out. There was a book written based on the story, and it was made
into a movie. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

Melissa,
I don't have a very useful answer, but I haven't seen anyone post
anything else yet. What kind of bombing was your patron thinking
of--conventional or nuclear--and where did it take place. There have been
episodes in which U.S. aircraft accidentally dropped unarmed nuclear
weapons. See for example the article "Aircraft 53-1876A has lost a device"
in American Heritage, September, 2000. But there were obviously no incidents
of nuclear explosions.
There is a general interest book about the undisclosed or supressed
health effects of nuclear weapons testing in Utah called The Day We Bombed
Utah by John G. Fuller, New American Library, 1984. It discusses the drift
of fall-out over civilian areas including some major cities. Not made into
a movie though, as far as I know. However, the 1994 film Blue Sky with
Jessica Lange and Tommy Lee Jones does deal with nuclear weapons testing out
west. Here's part of the review from the TV Guide website

"At the dawn of the 1960s, Major Hank Marshall (Tommy Lee Jones), a US Army
nuclear engineer, favors underground nuclear testing, despite the preference
of army brass for open-air detonations. His wife Carly (Jessica Lange), a
Barbie-doll bourgeoise, is slowly being suffocated by domestic torpor and
encroaching

You might run this by your patron and see what happens.

I have a vague memory of hearing that the 1968 movie THE DAY THE FISH
CAME OUT (about a couple of mislaid atomic bombs in Greece) was based
on a real incident, but can't verify that now. It was not based on a
pre-existing book, though a paperback novelization of it was published.
