We have a patron who is looking to find the title and author of a book he
read years ago (1960s-1970s?) in which hell is the individual's worst
nightmare -- artists endlessly paint but never finish the work, authors
endlessly write, etc. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Could it be Richard Matheson's What Dreams May Come? It came out in 1991.
It was also made into a Robin William's movie.

I wonder if this could be "The Great Divorce," by C.S.
Lewis? Though it was originally published in 1946, it
is still being published in paperback, and the scenes
of hell you describe seem to ring a bell.
