Patron is looking for a book she read about 20 years ago where the North
and South poles flipped.
The term for this can be:
Paleomagnetic pole reversal
Magnetic reversal
Faraday effect.

Not sure if any of these descriptors are in the title.
Any ideas?

This sounds like "The HAB Theory" by Allan Eckert -
came out in 1976. The theory was that the poles would
become unbalanced periodically, which caused the earth
to rotate on its axis, wiping out most life, hence the
dinosaur extinction, etc. Good read!
