Greetings,

My reading group has chosen "classics" this year and our book for this month
is "The Grapes of Wrath". I thought it might be interesting to come up with
a "readalikes" list for each month's book. So any suggestions? Could either
be similiar in style or subject matter, and authors past or present. Looking
forward to your ideas.

I have another related question, but will send it as a seperate email so the
subject line matches the replies.

oh boy!
One of my all-time favorite books is "Let Us Now
Praise Famous Men," by James Agee. This moving
and truly astonishing non-fiction account of
Agee's experience living with dirt-poor
sharecroppers in the depression-era Deep South is
difficult to describe - it contains poems,
dialogue, intensely detailed descriptions of
people and things, and is accompanied by Walker
Evans' stunning photographs. Agee struggles to
the base of his soul to testify, honor, and
somehow do justice to these people and his own
feelings. I don't think I've ever read anything
that has had quite such an effect on my, except
maybe King Lear. The fact that this book didn't
make The Modern Library's list of top 100
nonfiction works of the century is criminal. One
of the only books that trumps Grapes of Wrath at
its own game. Okay, enough raving.

There's another book, "Thieves' Market" by A. I.
Bezzerides, that is hard to find, but a good
proletarian novel about farmers working in
California's central valley in the 40s. Also the
Arturo Bandini books of John Fante, including
"Ask the Dust." The introduction by Charles
Bukowski about being homeless in the library will
be appreciated by any librarian working in a
major urban area. Good hard books about hard
times. And then Karen Hesse's good YA verse
novel, "Out of the Dust."
