QUEENS LIBRARY BREAKS NEW GROUND WITH NATIONAL INITIATIVE
Essence Magazine Editor to Participate in "More-Than-Just-A-Book-Club"
Kick-Off
Video-Teleconferencing, Author Appearances and More
JAMAICA, NY, JANUARY 5, 2002* In celebration of Women's History Month, the
Queens Library will launch its first "more-than-just-a-book club" reading and
discussion group, dubbed Sisterfriends. The first gathering will take place
on Monday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m., at the Central Library, 89-11 Merrick
Boulevard. Admission is free. Pre-registration is requested.
The opening gathering is sure to be a fun-filled and enlightening evening as=20
the Library will host three women authors who will discuss their books and
the issues that compelled them to write their stories. On hand will be senior
editor at Essence Magazine Ziba Kashef, author of Like a Natural Woman, an
easy-to-read guide on examining alternative and natural healing
methods for women. Also appearing is award-winning author Gwynne Forster
whose latest novel, When Twilight Comes deals with sibling rivalry and all of
its ramifications within the family. Last but not least is children's author=20
L. Carol Lewis whose cleverly put together book Little Lumpy's Book of
Blessings, helps parents to teach their children to appreciate the simple
things in life.
Following the meeting with the authors and discussion of their books, the
authors will be signing free copies while the supplies last. There will also=20
be door prizes.
The Sisterfriends project, which is being operated by the Queens Library, in=20
partnership with the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County in
Charlotte, N.C., is a dynamic concept that brings together readers from
multi-ethnic, economic, educational and life skills backgrounds in an open
forum for discussion and sharing, using books as the catalyst for or support=20
of selected women's topics. To enhance many of the issues raised during the
once-per-month gatherings, the Queens Library will look to bring the authors=20
of the books to meet with the Sisterfriends members. This effort will be
assisted by the Pen American Center. Equally as important as meeting to
discuss books, is providing a haven for relaxation, fun, discussion and
meeting new friends.
As part of the Queens Library's partnership with the Charlotte Library there=20
will be a web site and message board where members can go and check up on
on-going discussions, connect with friends and share their opinions.
Additionally, and what elevates this innovative concept of partnering with
other libraries from the usual book group format, will be the two libraries'=20
ability to share the special guests and programs with club members via Video=20
Teleconferencing (VTC). By using VTC the libraries are able to bring authors=20
to other partnering libraries, and to share their audiences via technology.
The first VTC kick-off in conjunction with the Sisterfriends project with the
Charlotte Library will be launched during National Library Week and
broadcast out of Charlotte, on Monday, April 15. The special guest will be
author and motivational speaker Jewel Diamond Taylor, author of the book
Sisterfriends. Ultimately, the goal of the two library systems is to reach
out to other libraries across the country to join in a national effort of
reading and sharing.
For further information, to become a member of Sisterfriends or to
pre-register for the March 18 event, please contact Donna Hill at the Queens
Library 718/990-8643. All Sisterfriends monthly meetings will take place at
the Central Library, unless otherwise noted.
