A patron is trying to find a book that he read in his childhood. Here's
what he remembers: it's about a sailor who is a "slacker" and likes to

all day on his boat (a destroyer? an aircraft carrier?) and burn garbage
in
the garbage room. He does all kinds of mischievous things to those who
make
him work. The title is something like "Boats Away" but is NOT
"Away All Boats," which the patron read and said is the wrong book
(although
he did like it...). Any ideas?

Aha!! I know this one!! My brother and I read it (over and over) in
high school, and I somewhat suspect it might have influenced his decision
to go into the Navy....It's "Away Boarders" by Daniel V. Gallery, about
one bosun's first class Fatso Gianinni (or some such) and his team of
cohorts. Other books by the same author: Now Hear This!, Cap'n Fatso,
and Stand By-y-y to Start Engines. Think I'll go reserve some of
them.....
