I wonder if the title you seek (which could have been excerpted, or
printed in entirety for that matter, in a periodical) is:
Mandino, Og. The greatest miracle in the world.
First published in 1975 (most subsequent editions have been published by
Bantam), this 108-page book features a mysterious character identified as
a "ragpicker", who turns out to be the source of much wisdom for the
narrator.
A shot in the dark ...

Another possibility is a short story by the Lutheran pastor and author
Walter Wangerin, Jr., entitled Ragman, which is included in:
Ragman, and other cries of faith. San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1984.
and appears to have been reprinted a number of times, including online.

I've been deleting all the responses as I was sure I wasn't familiar
with this one, but a thought occurred to me whilst merrily
deleting....
A long, long shot: In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon, or the
contemporary retelling of the the same story line: What Would
Jesus Do by Garrett Ward Sheldon.
A very sick & raggedly dressed man comes into a church and
challenges the congregation to "do good deeds" (NOT a quote -- I
can't remember the exact request. I sort of feel like the Wizard of
Oz bestowing the "Doer of Good Deeds" testimony!) The bulk of
the story is how the man's challenge inspired some people to
change their lifestyles, etc.
I only listened to the original In His Steps on tape; I don't know how
either version of the book might fit the patron's request. Good luck.

Finally, brethern, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
what ever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there
is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Subject: Religious Parable??
Picking your brain: A patron is trying to locate a story she remembers
reading in a Christian magazine (she thinks) in the early 80s (she
thinks). Her guess at the title is Raggedy Man (but it's not the
mystery by Lillian O'Donnell). She described it as a religious
parable
of Jesus's life. She remembers a "man dressed in raggedy clothing"
doing good deeds. If this sounds familiar to anyone please pass along
the title and author, and if possible, where we could find it. Thanks
in advance for any help.
