I have a patron who is looking for a list of literary autobiographies.
I'm assuming that she's looking for books by well known authors who have
written about books that they have read, and the effect books have had
on their lives. If anyone else has another definition of what a
literary autobiography is, please let me know. She's looking for both
american and foreign authors, contemporary and past, she just wants some
ideas. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I can recommend Madeleine L'engle's book, "Two-part invention: the story of
a marriage." There is also a prequel to this that I don't remember the title
of. I haven't read it yet, but John Bayley's books about Iris Murdoch "Elegy
for Iris" might qualify, too.

I enjoyed "Education of a Wandering Man" by Louis L'Amour. Is this
the type she is interested in? He's well-known and American and may
be considered contemporary.

I think my definition of this term would be autobiographies that are written
in a literary style, as opposed to a popular or gossipy one.

I highly recommend "How Reading Changed My Life" by Anna Quindlen. It is a
short, but powerful biography with plenty of book lists.

In his collection of speeches and essays "A Merry Heart", Robertson Davies
has a great one, "A Rake at Reading" that encompasses not only his own
reading pleasures but why he considers reading to be important to personal
and national identity. Canadian, BTW, but discard those superfluous "u"s,
and everything is OK. (Just kidding! Sheesh!) ;-}

Who was the publisher of the audiobook "More than a Mistress" by Balogh. I was excited to hear of a regency other than Quick on audio but I can't find ordering information. I checked Amazon and a website called Audiobooks which usually covers all publishers.

Ex Libris: Confessions of a common reader by Ann Fadiman is a gem. The
impact of books throughout her life makes for a series of charming essays.
One of my favorites is a brilliant piece on what it was like to 'wed' her
book collection with her husband's when they moved in together. Another
'ah, YES!' piece was on compulsive proofreading.

Helene Hanff's 84 Charring Cross Road; Duchess of Bloomsbury; and Apple of
My Eye are all wonderful books.

Anne Fadiman's Ex Libris is a thoughtful collection of autobiographical
essays on a bookish life.

Kendall Hailey's How I Became an Autodidact is a funny memoir by the
daughter of a novelist and playwright of a 'year off' spent by reading the
classics.

I, too, highly recommend Eudora Welty's book, One Writer's Beginnings.
Eloquent and fascinating. A few other books I have loved and which the lady
might find of interest, (keeping in mind journals and memoirs can be close
cousins of autobiographies and sometimes are one and the same, or so it
seems to me:) are:

Working Days by John Steinbeck.(American)
Let Me Make Myself Plain (and)
Plainer Still by Catherine Cookson (British)
Dance on the Earth by Margaret Laurence (Canadian)
The Journals of John Cheever (American)
Inside Memory by Timothy Findley (Canadian)
Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes. (American.)

Don't know if these books fit neatly into the category, but worth
mentioning anyway.
