I have a patron who is looking for a book of historical fiction set in
China. The author also wrote another book set in colonial Australia. The
patron believes that the author lived in both places and fictionalized
some of her experiences. She read both books approximately ten years
ago.

Any ideas?

Might this be "Homesick" by Jean Fritz? It's a children's book, but it is
the writer's memories of being the daughter of American Missionaries living
in China in the 1920's.
