I have a friend who's trying to find a book with the following
description:

This is the book that I remember: It is actually a series of books on
this one guy who is the last mercenary soldier from a planet whose only
successful market was in lending well-trained mercenaries to other
planets. The last mercenary somehow sees his planet destroyed and he
goes off and has adventures with some alien helper. For some reason,
his bones do not break, so when he gets trapped in a room by some device
that tightens around him more when he moves, he purposely moves so that
the device squeezes him down to the bone and then breaks. That's how he
escapes that particular predicament which is the only part of the book
that I remember well.
