A patron is trying to remember the title of a book she
read long ago (see description below). I've searched
the net & the Fiction-L archives but found nothing
remotely similar.

Any leads much appreciated.

I think that this is Ginny and the Mystery Doll by Catherine Wooley.
I really loved this book as a child. OCLC says it was published in 1960.
Hope this helps,

Hi all. I've used your booklists many times but
haven't posted to the list until now.

Well, I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but when I
was a child, I remember reading the Ginnie and Geneva books. Internet search
turns up the author as Catherine Woolley and a search of our system's
catalog gives me a title that I believe is the one I'm thinking of "Ginnie
and the Mystery Doll," with a pub date of 1960 [which would be fine since I
lived on used books when I was a kid]. I don't remember all the specifics
and we don't have that book at my library, but there was an antique doll at
an auction that was supposed to have a priceless jewel attached to it
somehow. There's lots of "suspense" with the doll and all and eventually
Ginnie actually finds the jewel in a jar full of buttons that she purchased
at the auction.
That series is kinda funny because there's a whole set of suspenseful
mystery kinds of stories, like this one and some more where they've gone to
Europe alongside more domestic "girl" fiction where Ginnie is entering
cooking contests and running a babysitting service out of her attic.
But like I said, it may not be what you're searching for as there are no
diamonds in the doll's head.
