After almost getting stoned for trying to withdraw the Australian series by William Stuart Long, we decided to keep them even if we were missing titles and couldn't be replaced, as long as most of the missing titles were available at our cooperative libraries and could be reserved. If we start receiving too many requests for those we can't replace, it might be time to withdraw the entire series. It also depends on whether or not the title in a series can "stand alone". If each books ends with a cliff-hanger (such as the Beverly Lewis Lancaster County series), and there are missing titles, then we might be inclined to withdraw them. It all depends on the shape of the book and if they are still circulating.

I'm not sure this helps, but that is what we try to follow.
