Hi, Listers,

We had a customer request info on a book she had just
returned which she had gotten from our New Book area.
Since she only had it 28 days, the book could have
come in June or July of 2001 or after.

She doesn't know any words in the title or the main
character's name, but says it was set in a town with a
name like "Majestic". The main character is going
through a divorce and she has a college-age daughter
named Natalie. There is another woman in the book
named Kathy, who commits suicide. The cover had a
lake and hills or fields. The author is female.

Not much to go on, any ideas? I've already
unsuccessfully checked Novelist using some of the
names and the words divorce or suicide or both. I'll
be glad to follow up on any leads.

Sounds to me like The World Below by Sue Miller. Blue cover with clouds.

The World Below. Cath Hubbard, a San Francisco woman in her 50s, returns to
her grandmother's small Vermont house after the death of an aunt who left
the property to Cath and her brother Lawrence. Cathy had lived with her
grandparents for a few years in her teens, after her mother's suicide, and
now makes her wounded way back, in the wake of a divorce, to sort through
her memories of her beloved grandmother, Georgia. This is the standard fare
of American literary fiction: a life change prompting a search into the
past. What is far less ordinary is Miller's placid, nuanced depiction of her
protagonist's emotional journey. None of Cath's feelings can be easily
predicted by the reader, but all of them ring true. She finds her
grandmother's diary and begins to fill in the stories that Georgia had
hinted at over the years. What Cath discovers in her grandmother's journal
is a secret that has lost its power to shock; and that very wearing away of
taboo adds to the poignancy of Georgia's restricted life. Her story unfolds
against a backdrop of Cath's more immediate griefs and concerns and begins
to recede as Cath's San Francisco life returns to claim her. Miller's prose
appears effortless, but is like the gestures of a magician that conceal how
the trick is accomplished. The result is a sage, continually surprising
novel about finding peace of mind in a combination of habit, love, and

This could be On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah. The
main character's daughter is leaving to study abroad
and her husband wants a divorce. When she returns to
her home town she meets an old love again. His wife
committed suicide.

This sounds like "On Mystic Lake" by Kristen Hannah. The cover shows trees
and a lake. The main character, Annie, is going through a divorce, has a
daughter studying abroad, and moves back to her old home to Mystic,
Washington. There she meets Nick, an old flame who is now a widower whose
wife commited suicide. He has a small daughter named Izzie. But the
hardcover was published in 1999. I hope this helps!
