Also, "My Side of the Mountain," by Jean Craighead
George. A young boy relates his adventures during the
year he spends living alone in the Catskill Mountains
including his struggle for survival, his dependence on
nature, his animal friends, and his ultimate
realization that he needs human companionship.

I am helping someone put together a list of readings on living the
simple life. We have lots of great memoirs and how-tos, but we would
like to add some fiction. We are looking for stories, poems and novels
for children and adults that describe the quest for a quality way of
life or a simpler way of life. We want realistic rather than
romanticized fiction like Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Thank you.

Beyond that, Judith Moffett's "Time like an ever-rolling stream" comes to
mind. It's science fiction, set in a near future in which human beings
have been required, by an advanced alien race, to rediscover a simpler,
sustainable way of life or be eradicated in order to preserve the
viability of the planet. One of the characters is a back-to-the-land
mentor who seems to be modelled after Wendell Berry.
