Any ideas for this query?

I have a patron who is looking for a book he read in about 1995 (it
wasn't necessarily written then). It's science fiction and is about a
man who wears a crystal and when he sleeps he goes into an alternate
universe. What he does in one universe affects the other universe and
whatever he affects has to balance out in the other universe. He
thinks the title might have included pawn or adept or crystal. It's
not Anne McCaffrey, Piers Anthony or Terry Brooks.
