I have an email message from a client who has asked for readalikes for the fantasy author Robin Hobb. Unfortunately, I don't have any details about any specific aspects of Robin Hobb's writing that the client enjoys, but I will be very pleased to receive your suggestions.
Thanks,
Denise

I've not read her books (though my wife is reading one right now, I
believe) but since Robin Hobb is a pseudonym for Megan Lindholm, I
would think your client would want to check out Lindholm also--though
I gather they are different sorts of books.
Here's the author talking about her work as Lindholm

and about her work as Hobb

From the David Gemmill page:
"Robin Hobbs'Assassin/Liveship Trilogies are similar to the writing
of David Gemmill or David Eddings, with the same in-depth detail.
Personally I found the Liveship trilogy to be superior to the
Assassin one. There is romance, adversity, buckles being swashed
left right and centre! A definate must read for any Gemmell fan!"

R. L. Modesitt having been suggested, why not also Robert Jordan's Wheel of
Time?

Just saw this thread and had to offer my bit...you are talking one of my
favorite current authors here. On the premise that entitles me
to name several others that also write speculative fiction. I did check
quickly to see if they hadn't been named, but if I am duplicating,
apologies! The following have my unqualified seal of approval.
Janny Wurts, she holds the title to my personal fantasy writer
favorite, and I think she comes the closest to Robin Hobb's style. Or
perhaps Kate Elliott is also very close. Oh, and if you make the jump
from fantasy to SF on the basis of fabulous characterization and emphasis
on character development and intricate social structure, (as why the
patron is seeking similar work) then you are talking Lois McMasters
Bujold. Who also writes fantasy, as I recall.
Elizabeth Hayden (that might be Haydon) has a fantasy series just
completed. Sara Douglass has written an excellent series in Australia that
is just now being published in the U.S. Oh, and look for a brand new one
that I can't recall the author just now, but its within the last 6 months.
Kushiel's Dart is the title, and there's another to follow.
"Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not
a crime. Ask the infantry and ask the dead.

By those criteria you might also recommend C. J. Cherryh, a most prolific
author of mostly sf (but she also has a fantasy series going) and a writer
highly skilled at "thinking like an alien." Check out her Chanur
Saga--you'll find yourself looking at Tully, the human character, as if he
were a new species.
