Hi. Two titles (and I know there are more!) that come to my mind
are:
THE OATH, by Frank Peretti. A small town is "ruled" by a dragon
that represents sin. Adult themes, and would make a good
discussion book.
THE ATONEMENT CHILD, by Francine Rivers. I have not read this
one but understand it's about rape, and how the woman handles
being pregnant from that rape. Rivers is a good author (at least
from the other books I have read by her).

Doing some weeding, and came across a book that might apply to
the request for "gritty" Christian fiction.
PINSTRIPE PARABLES, by David McCasland. Haven't read it, but
quote from jacket blurb: "...what if an event described in the Bible
took place in your neighborhood, your office, your nation's capital?
An attempted rape next door, a swindle by your business partner,
a murder committed by the President of the [U.S.]....These fictional
stories are based on the Bible itself and each parable is followed
by the actual record from scripture." Sounded interesting... BYE!

The Church Ladies by Lisa Samson
Includes an extramarital affair and the tragic death of a college freshman.
Friendship Cake by J. Lynne Hinton
"Addresses issues of loneliness, unplanned teenage pregnancy, cancer,
Alzheimer's, lost love, death of a child, faith in God, racism,
homosexuality, and various other situations" (Amazon.com)
Some Wildflower in My Heart by Jamie Langston Turner
Margaret has hardened her heart against God and man due to being abused by
her grandfather, who is a church elder, for years as a youth.
Enduring Love by Francine Rivers
"retells the biblical love story of Gomer and Hosea as a tale set against
the romantic backdrop of the California Gold Rush. The heroine, Angel,is a
young woman who was sold into prostitution as a child."
"In Staying Pure, Payton tries to please God and her amorous boyfriend, and
in Sober Faith, she fights pressure to go along with her friends who
experiment with drugs and alcohol. The author, Stephanie Perry Moore, heads
Soul Publishing, a small African-American Christian fiction press based in
Virginia that has released four titles about relationships to serve as
cautionary tales for teens and young African-American adults. Flame (1999),
Perry's first book, tells of the struggles of a couple after they have
premarital sex. " from "Fiction Hits the Mark." (Theola S. Labbe. Publishers

Velma Still Cooks in Leeway by Vinita Hampton Wright
"Welcome to Leeway, a close-knit, small town that could be anywhere. But
there's trouble simmering under its peaceful surface. Shellye has turned up
pregnant, but accuses Len of date rape. Doris walks and smokes, sunk in
depression; Cousin Howard is dying; Albert is more and more silent. Grady
seems to be the knight in shining armor who will solve Shellye's problems.
But why does Shellye seem so unhappy? And where did the bruises on her arm
come from?" Amazon.com
Grace at Bender Springs by Vinita Hampton Wright
"Their troubles are not one-dimensional, as in so many Christian novels. A
pastor's wife is hemmed in by despair and old, acknowledged wounds; a
teenage boy is saved from suicide at the last moment by a firm,
understanding grandfather--and then again by an entire community of people
who are praying for him; an elderly woman battles demons of the past as well
as present-day irritations, such as the neighborhood dog who keeps
eliminating in her yard. The novel offers no easy answers for Christians,
but teaches a great deal about receiving simple grace. (Beliefnet, June 2000)".

Subject: Christian fiction that pushes the envelope
In a few months I will be teaching a Reader's Advisory class on Christian
Fiction. Another librarian commented to me that all such books must be
"pretty chaste", all sweetness and light, with no sex or violence. I
told him that from the reviews I've read, some authors & publishers of
Christian Fiction are starting to push the envelope. Problem is, I can't
think of any. Can anyone make suggestions? Thanks, and I will compile a
list.

I'm not particularly knowledgable about current Christian-fiction
authors, but I can think of a couple of literary/mainstream authors of a
few years back who might fit the description in the subject line: Walker
Percy and Flannery O'Connor. Both were strong Christians who
incorporated some violent or sexual or "edgy" themes in their fiction.

A couple of my favorite southern writers would fit this bill : Walker
Percy and Flannery O'Connor, especially her short story "A Good Man is
Hard to Find".
I also read a review in a recent issue of Publishers' Weekly which
sounded interesting. The book was about a young woman in a small
southern town who has a vision of God, and seems to have healing
abilities as a result. Unfortunately for her, the local churchgoers
aren't very impressed when she tells them that God is female. Can anyone
on Fiction-L remember this title or author? I can't, despite several
days of racking my brain and searching through copies of PW.

In a similar vein are two sf novels recently published: "Towing Jehovah" and
"Only Begotten Daughter," by James Morrow, I think. The copy in the SFBC
newsletter warns that some readers may find them offensive because of the
slant they take on religious subjects.
Might Joseph Heller's "God Knows" qualify?
