Book about Woman & Family in Cairo

The story follows the life of a woman and her family (especially her
daughters) in Cairo, Egypt. The time span seems to be from the 1940's to
the 1990's. The story deals with the changes in Egyptian society during
this period and how they impact the woman and her family's lives. At the
end of the story the woman ends up moving to Calfornia.
Does this ring a bell with anyone? The patron believes the book is ficiton.

Once again, a request directed to the collective knowledge of Fiction_Lers.
We had a patron come in yesterday looking for a book she had read in the
past, and so far we've come up blank on what title it might be. Here is
what she remembers:
