Okay, all you SF fans out there, here's the question. Patron has one of
those little Booklover's Desk Calendars, with recommended reading and
literary factlets for each date, and it recommends _Orion in the Dying Time_
as the very best book Ben Bova has written. Since we do not have any of the
Orion books (don't ask me why...), I am preparing to do an ILL. HOWEVER, if
the series needs to be read in order to be properly appreciated, she would
prefer to start at the beginning. The official Ben Bova website is not
cooperative (pages don't load, etc.) on this point. Do any of you have an
informed opinion about this particular series? TIA.

Legendary Heroes (1996) [SF] - Appeared in the December 1996 issue
of Dragon magazine (#236) edited by Dave Gross.

I don't know if they need to be read in order.

Library, the series order is as follows:

Just to clarify -- I have the order. I am looking for advice from any one
who is familiar with the series as to whether they should be read in order
or can be sampled willy-nilly without being confused. Thanks, though to

I read the first three Orion books several years ago--in order, but they
tend to skip around in time anyway. It might depend on whether the person
is familiar with this type of book. There is a certain amount of
explanation of the background in the second and third book, but if the
person is used to a straightfoward read he might prefer to start with the
first.

The series publication dates are as follows:

Orion, 1984
Orion in the Dying Time, 1990
Orion and the Conqueror, 1994
Orion Among the Stars, 1995

Presumably Bova wrote them as they're supposed to occur, though as I
understand it, the character of Orion bounces through time rather like Sam
Beckett in "Quantum Leap"!
