I am posting this question for a coworker--
do you know of any other short story collections that are similar to
Brownsville, i.e. those that have as their "theme" a sense of
place/community? Possibly something that deals other cultures, i.e.
Vietnamese, European, Chinese, Arabic, etc.
I can (and have) thought of several young adult titles such as An Island
Like You and 145th Street Stories, but was hoping for some adult titles--
Thanks

Two writers jump immediately to mind: Stuart Dybek (particularly _The coast
of Chicago_, 1990; but other titles, as well) and Stewart O'Nan, whose
explorations of the grey area between novel and short story have yielded an
excellent sense of place. His _Everyday people_ (2001) offers a dead-on
depiction of urban Pittsburgh, for instance.

And hasn't R. K. Narayan, of Malgudi fame, written a number of shorts? I
would think they'd qualify.

"Homestead" by Rosina Lippi is a collection of 12 linked stories set in a
small, isolated Austrian village from 1909 to 1977. The stories trace the
intertwined lives of the women of three families. I really enjoyed this
book.

Also, for a collection featuring Vietnamese characters adapting to life in
America - try A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, by Robert Olen Butler.
However, they are not all set in one geographical area.
