kids book - use computer to learn math

Adult patron read it when she was a kid (so probably
came out in the 70's). The book is a chapter book and
the kids in the book all have difficulty with math.
They get/have/find a computer (much different kind
then what we'd have today <g>) that they hope will do
their math work for them. Their teacher is or becomes
aware that they have the computer but lets them think
she doesn't know.
The moral is that by the time they enter all the
algorithms and formulae into the machine they realize
they've learned math.
Sound familiar? The patron would like her daughter to
read the book, if we can find it.
