I was wondering if you all had advice for people who are new to RA
library work. What one thing do you wish you knew then that you know
now? What do you wish your new RA staff knew when they started
working with you?
Thanks,

Self Promotion Alert!
I have a new article coming out in the next issue of Reference and User
Services Quarterly, which is a lit review of all research on readers'
advisory (and more!) One of the reasons I wrote it is for students just
like Holly who want to know where to start. I was in that position not
that long ago and I had no idea what to read or where to find it, so I
wrote a lit review.
Here's the full citation:
Moyer, Jessica E. "Adult Fiction Reading: A Literature Review of
Readers' Advisory Services, Adult Fiction Librarianship and Fiction
Readers." Reference and User Services Quarterly, vol. 44, no 3 (Spring
2005): 38-47
Until March rolls around and the article comes out here are my top two
books to read:
Readers' advisory services in the public library - Joyce Saricks and
Nancy Brown - its the best and a new edition will be out soon
Any of the collections edited by Ken Shearer, especially the 2001,
Readers' Advisors' Companion. It includes an excellent chapter by
Catherine Ross that sums up her years of research on fiction readers.

I hope that no one is having to do RA that doesn't love to read.
Also, take credit for what you have read, not feel bad about what you haven't. No one can read everything (though you can try!), so exploit your love for mysteries or SF or whatever, and discover the sources that will support you elsewhere. These could be co-workers, reference books, workshops, mailing lists, whatever.
Finally, recognize that you will learn on the job at a breakneck pace, just because patrons will be asking every day about books and authors.

1. What RA reference sources are available (e.g., books, in-house
generated lists, Internet sites, and listservs) and **how to use them**.
2. How to conduct an RA interview.
And one last suggestion: Read Joyce Sarick and Nancy Brown's _Readers'
Advisory Service in the Public Library_ (2nd ed.). It rocks!!

1. Read in genres that you might not normally explore.
2. Don't be afraid to ask the patron questions. They might not always have
answers, but they'll know you are interested in helping them.
3. Be friendly, open and enthusiastic.
4. Don't underestimate the patron's willingness to explore a genre with
similar themes, even if on first thought, they don't seem to have much in
common.
5. Ask the patron to let you know if they liked, or disliked, your
recommendations. Feedback is a
a measure of how well you are doing your job, and will help you advise the
patron in the future.
6. Keep lists for your colleagues. They will be grateful!

Take a class. I took an on-line class in Reader's Advisory which was a
helpful.
Look at and use the tools used in RA (which you learn about in class). I
especially liked Joyce Saricks "Reader's guide to genre fiction" Don't
forget to use on-line sources such as NoveList also.
Read--especially from genres (Saricks book is helpful for this) and from
the bestseller lists, but any reading you do can come in handy.

To remember that the important thing is that you really understand how important reading is -- this translates into everything from appreciating why patrons really want their reserves to come in, to why it matters whether you read a series in order, respecting the genre you don't personally care for, or can understand the lament that "no one writes like Mary Higgins Clark". That bond with the reader starts the conversation.
I hope that no one is having to do RA that doesn't love to read.
Also, take credit for what you have read, not feel bad about what you haven't. I am a reader and do some RA at my library, as well as doing some
selection.
Our staff does an annual booklet of staff recommendations that often
comes
in handy. I would also suggest reading a few review sources a month to
get
a general idea of what's out there or upcoming. That way if someone
asks
about John Grisham's newest title or "that new mystery about the
archeologist", you will have some idea of what they are talking about.
Often a list of Movie-ties for the new year is published, which is also
helpful. To be honest I prefer Publisher's Weekly to Library Journal or
Booklist in this regard. I have no interest in the latest managerial
snit
and I enjoy the "Behind The Bestsellers" and Pre-Pub Alerts features.
We
also keep a copy of the current On-Order list, both by Title and by
author,
at oor Fiction desk. Finally, we can access the Internet at the Fiction
desk, thus allowing us to consult Ingram, Amazon, and Novelist.

I would point out to them that the biggest myth in RA services is that
you have to have personally read what you suggest. I would then show
them how to use NoveList and however many RA reference tools you've
got, followed by the genre magazines like RT Book Club, Locus and
Deadly Pleasures so they can get an idea of what's out there. I've also
just updated my list of RA Resources for my class if anyone wants it as
a Word attachment. Includes print, journals, website, and organizations
for the last 5 years except a couple classics that are noted as such.

I agree that a non-reading librarian seems to be somethig of a contradiction
in terms. But in fairness, a librarian job is usually (town/city)
government, so people figure it's secure. Which may account for the
phenomenon. Also it isn't likely to involve business travel or a lot of
"office politicking," brown-nosing, etc., which many people find repulsive.
