With immediate apologies that this request is actually a non-fiction title, but I have checked our library catalog, google, Fiction_L archives, Fiction_L booklists and amazon with no results....
A customer, about ten years ago, read two books about POWs. The first was King Rat by James Clavell [set in WWII] and the second is the one he can't remember. What he does remember is that it was a non-fiction title, set during the Vietnam War, where POWs raised two rats [a male and female], breeded them and used their offspring to stay alive [lovely lunchtime reading!]. They then offered the meat to their guards telling them it was squirrel. The POWs also used a type of Morse code to communicate with one another.
I think the part about the code was a pretty common occurence and perhaps even the part about eating rats was as well but this customer said that he had never heard of an instance where POWs actually bred rats.
Thanks in advance!
