Our patron is looking for a science fiction book he read in the early
1980's. It featured a 1957 Chevy, red and white, and drove through
"portals" to get to different worlds. The father's or grandfather's
"personality" was "in" a truck that did the same thing. Help! All we
can think of here is the Amber series by Zelazny, and we really don't
think that was it.

Zelazny's 1979 novel ROADMARKS features an endless freeway with portals
to other realities. I don't recall details of the plot beyond that, but
this site indicates the protagonist's car *is* a Chevy, so. . . .

I agree with Dennis, sounds like ROADMARKS to me too. The FATHER of the
young man in question left a "companion" behind with the boy's mother,
an AI in a book, Leaves Of Grass, I think. It directs him to a highway
that has exits for different time periods, a road his father is also on
(with his new book Flowers (Fleurs de Mal by Baudelaire) and is under a
death threat. A fun book, I'd like to see a movie of this.
