This position will be responsible for fiction selection for the San Diego County Library (SDCL) system, and will also oversee serials and continuations. The position is supervised by the Acquisitions Librarian II and works closely with other members of the Acquisitions/Collection Development Unit, the Cataloging Unit and branch and division staff. This is a full-time position, and is located at SDCL Headquarters in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
* Select new fiction for SDCL using trade information, requests, branch profiles, and other indicators
* Accurately maintain multiple fiction budgets
* Monitor holds lists and requests and resulting rush orders
* Prepare collection development lists for backlist fiction and other topics
* Maintain periodical subscriptions and continuations
* Actively participate in division policy and procedure analysis and planning; present department-sponsored training classes as part of the unit
* Answer questions and assist staff in person, via phone and email on acquisitions and fiction topics
* Review donations and gifts; respond to local authors
Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
* Strong background in and appreciation of wide range of popular, contemporary, classic and genre fiction commonly found in multi-branch public library systems
* Knowledge of: fiction and publishing trends, topics and issues; current public reading tastes and habits; current authors; commonly used book vendors
* Ability to quickly organize and efficiently process large amount of data
* Time management skills sufficient to meet multiple rapid deadlines
* Basic budgeting knowledge sufficient to manage multiple branch budgets
* Good oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with library staff, vendors, and other.
San Diego County Library (SDCL) consists of 32 branches and two Mobile Libraries, and provides service to 11 incorporated cities and 20 unincorporated communities in the suburban, small-town and rural areas of San Diego County, California.
