Subject: Cookson's Mary Ann series
I'm interested in comments about Catherine Cookson's "Mary Ann" series.
Is it a "classic", or is it not a strong candidate for long-lasting
interest? More to the point, if it's not earning its keep on a fiction
shelf, is it still an important series to retain, or would other
librarians feel comfortable in letting it go?
Thank you for your thoughts.

1. Popularity - I just weeded the "C"s. I went through the Cookson books and we still have readers for this author. The readership has declined over the years but it's still going out so I kept it.
2. Community Demographics - Park Ridge has lots of seniors (about 20% or more of the population) so we have many patrons who remember Cookson fondly. When they can't find new books to read, they travel back through the stacks to old favorites and Cookson is still on some of their lists. If you have a younger community, Cookson maybe marginal enough to pitch.
3. Condition - I'm always amazed that older readers are not offended by dirty, smelly books. Some of the younger Park Ridge staff hesitate to touch books that the older readers keep checking out. If the book is in bad shape, you can't use it for displays, you'll have readers who refuse to check it out and browsers who won't look at it.
4. Number of other Cookson books you own - Cookson wrote many books, some in series and some stand alones. As a dwindling author, you may not need all her stuff but should have a selection of items. If the Mary Ann series is in good shape, you might pitch something else by her. If the Mary Ann series is not read, you might withdraw it while keeping more popular books by Cookson.
Weeding is judgment. There are no rules, only guidelines. You just have to do the best you can.

It certainly has a good rank on my bibliographical list. And Cookson is one
of those authors who turns up on every "gentle reads" list. For those
readers who like Gentle but not Christian, she's probably one of the best
bets, being very prolific indeed.
