A patron has been hunting this book for 25 years. I told her, 'no problem,
give me a week and I'll have you an answer.' So here's the riddle,
Fiction-L: book written by a "female literary writer," set in (fairly)
contemporary United States, and is a "middle-aged woman finding herself"
sort of novel. In the early part of the book, the woman is on an ocean
liner. The device most remembered by my patron is that she is accompanied
by an invisible dog.

This sounds an awful lot like Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie. There is
an invisible dog and the main character is middle aged and travels from
America to England (by plane). What a terrific book. I hope this is the
one.
