I expected to find an answer at this great bibliography site for
prehistoric fiction
(cover scans and brief synopses included for most entries)
http://www.trussel.com/prehist/prehist6.htm#S
but none of the authors under letter S look like a close match. Your
patron might
have better luck though...

Hi
I have a patron looking for book(s) she read quite a while ago. They're set
in the same time frame as "The Clan of the Cave Bear" and the female
character in the series is similar to Ayal(?) in J. Auel's. She sounded out
the name as Sawajee (no idea how it's actually spelled). Sound familiar to
anyone?

Historical eras do tend to slip about. Perhaps what the patron was trying to
capture is Sacajawea, a name I've heard pronounced a variety of ways (told
authoritatively that it shold be Sah-CAH-ja-WE-a). Possible?

This one has probably already been mentioned, but I missed it-- how about
the 2 series on the ancient Aleuts by Sue Harrison, beginning with MOTHER
EARTH, FATHER SKY and SONG OF THE RIVER? A principle character (in the one
title currently on our shelves) is a woman named 'Chagak.' All the reviews
compare the books with Jean Auel, usually finding them inferior, but
interesting. The time period may be later than 'Earth's children' and the
setting is North America rather than Europe.
