Try The Book Club by Mary Alice Monroe--five friends who meet for a book club all facing turning points in their lives. Not as witty as Fowler, but definitely has character appeal and also has topics for discussion at the end.

I myself preferred Lorna Landvik's "Angry Housewives eating Bon Bons".
It concerns a neighborhood book group formed one snowy night and follows
the participants through the vagaries of their lives. Each chapter has
as a chapter heading a title of the book they are discussing. Not as
many allusions to Austen but interesting take on book groups and the
group dynamics of them.
