Years ago (in the 1970's?) I was reading Good Housekeeping, Redbook, McCall's
and Ladies Home Journal, and came across a novella (?) by Donald Westlake
(?). That's all really definite, huh?
The way I remember it, a woman goes to JFK airport w. her fiance. They're
supposedly catching a plan to the left coast fore her to meet his family. The
closer she gets to the airport, the more apprehensive she gets. She finally
tells him to get on the plane without her, that she'll take a later plane (?).
As she's going through this pre-wedding angst, she sees the usual line of
cabs. She gets into one of the cabs and asks the driver if he can take her to
California. He says "sure" and off they go. Along the way (spoiler?) they fall
in love.
It was an adorable story, and I'd love to re-read it. I don't know if it's
ever been anthologized, turned into a full-length book, etc.
Help!
Thanks in advance.
