I don't know how many of you have used the Metacritic site in the past. They
compile reviews of movies, music, and video games, giving a numerical score to
each work. They have now added book reviews to their site. Very interesting and
useful!

It's a nice site - unless you like romance. I found no reviews for Nora
Roberts, or 2 other prominents romance authors. Hopefully the site will include
them in the future.

It looks like the site's criterion for inclusion
is simply how many sources review a work, which
means that a lot of the genres will not be
represented, unless they're crossover hits or
blockbuster authors - things that are not merely
picked up in PW, LJ, Booklist & Kirkus, but in
NYT, Chicago Sun Times, USA Today, Entertainment
Weekly, Atlantic Monthly and such like. For
genres, www.overbooked.com's starred reviews give
a better representation, although even here
Romance and Horror and midlist mystery don't make
too much of an impact.

I'm kind of intrigued by the site, and as a
reviewer for two of their listed publications,
would sure love to know how they weight the
various results. (For those who haven't looked,
they give various weights to different critics
and publications, based on reputability,
influence, etc.) But it appears that is
proprietary - oh well.
