I was cleaning out old mail when I came upon this thread, which was never
compiled even though there were requests for it. On 12/12/02, we received
this query:
FROM: Liza Gilbert <[removed]@yahoo.com>
REC'D: 12/12/02, 10:08 PM
Hello, my name is Liza Gilbert and I just joined the list today. I run a
website with a book traveling project called BOOKTREK:
http://www.strangedevelopments.com/booktrek.htm.
I recently had a friend who was a Peace Corps volunteer ask me if I would
put some books into circulation for the project by mailing them to
volunteers. She has chosen six countries in which the political or religious
circumstances are particularly miserable, and where volunteers have an
especially hard time, more so after dark. She would like me to send books to
Bulgaria, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Uganda, and Kazakhstan. She has
also stressed the importance of sending "thick" (meaning lengthy--not
difficult) books, since the volunteers rarely have materials to read in
English, and because many of the female volunteers have a lot of free time
since their existence in these countries is not always safe.
Besides Bonfire of the Vanities and War & Peace, I'm somewhat at a loss for
how to go about finding good long books to send. I welcome any and all
suggestions for fiction that would be just plain enjoyable and LONG.
Thanks, Liza Gilbert

Given the season of the year, there are probably a lot of places in the US
where people would like to just hole up for a while, and want some "thick
books" to read while they do it. So compiling this list struck me as a
timely thing to do.

REC'D: 1/21/05, 12:46 PM
Several listmembers suggested that volunteers in foreign lands would
appreciate just about *any* American fiction, regardless of its length;
current bestsellers were stressed.
Many "classic" novels, especially British ones, are long (see Dickens,
Blackmore, and Thackeray above). It was the Brits, after all, who invented
the "three-decker" novel!
The Mammoth Book of...[this, that, and the other]. Some fiction, some non-,
from Carroll & Graf. Trade paperbacks, each +500pp.
Suggested nonfiction:
*Botkin, B. A., various Treasuries of American folklore
*Brant, Irving, 6v. biography of Pres. James Madison
Catton, Bruce, assorted volumes on the Civil War
Churchill, Winston, History of the English-Speaking Peoples (4v.), The
Second World War (6v.)
Dick, Everett, The Sod-House Frontier
Durant, Will & Ariel, The Story of Civilization (11v., all thick)
Foote, Shelby, The Civil War
Foreman, Amanda, Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire
Freeman, Douglas Southall, multivolume biographies of George Washington & R.
E. Lee
Furnas, J. C., The Americans: A Social History of the United States,
1687-1914
Kaye, M. M., memoirs
McCullough, David, Truman, John Adams, and other works
Malone, Dumas, biography of Thomas Jefferson (7v.)
Monaghan, Jay, et al., The Book of the American West
Shales, Tom, Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night
Live
Trager, James, The People's Chronology (to browse in)
Two slipcased sets of outsize paperbacks from Salamander: The Old West, The
Civil War. (3v. each)
*Society in America (an old series of lively "portraits" of American cities;
the titles I know of are):
The Spectacular San Franciscans, Julia Cooley Altrocchi
The Proper Bostonians, Cleveland Amory
The Serene Cincinnatians, Alvin F. Harlow
Washington Cavalcade, Charles Hurd
Memphis Down in Dixie, Shields McIlwaine
The Romantic New Orleanians, Robert Tallant
*Several volumes of the excellent old Rivers of America series
Many biographies and historical works are thick; browse your own stacks,
you're sure to find quite a few! (Don't forget to check out sections like
transportation, where you may discover lengthy and fascinating books on
steamboating, railroads, etc.; and other places where you file books
relating to the everyday lives of people.)
*Many romances, especially the historical kind, are hefty. (Consider that
Rosemary Rogers and Kathleen Woodiwiss, the inventors of the modern
bodice-ripper, were and are given to lengthy tomes. Other possibilities:
Roberta Gellis (esp. the six volumes of the Roselynde Chronicles); Jennifer
Roberson's Lady of Sherwood, Lady of the Forest.)
Much fantasy, as Dennis pointed out, comes "in bug-crushing size." I've
listed several above, but I'm sure there are plenty I've missed. Check your
sf/fantasy shelves, or better yet those in any bookstore.
*Likewise historical fiction.
*Omnibuses are always a good idea. Besides the ones listed above, Baen
Books has in recent years begun bringing out "unitary editions" of classic
old sf/fantasy writers such as Randall Garrett, Keith Laumer, James H.
Schmitz, and many others--as well as reprints of more recent ones like
Mercedes Lackey. The SF Book Club, Mystery Guild, and Quality Paperback
Book Club often publish omnibuses; among those in my collection are the
first three Mrs. Murphy mysteries by Rita Mae Brown (QPBC), the complete
Demon Princes of Jack Vance, the Enchanted Forest Chronicles of Patricia C.
Wrede, The Empty Crown (trilogy) by Rosemary Edghill, and the first three
Young Wizards novels by Diane Duane (SFBC), and numerous 4v. collections of
early mysteries by Dell Shannon/Lesley Egan/Elizabeth Linington (MG). Wings
Books has published the first nine Kinsey Millhone mysteries by Sue Grafton
in three thick volumes, and various other hardcover houses offer omnibus
volumes that include from two to four books by a single author, usually
popular.
*Another idea is to offer your readers several consecutive volumes of a
series. Much genre fiction may only be of average length, but by the time
you put from three to 20 or more volumes together, you'll have some
respectable bulk. The original Earthsea Trilogy of Ursula K. LeGuin, for
example, totals 525pp in the paperback edition in my collection. Three Mrs.
Pollifax novels would easily total 400pp or more. And so on.
