Booklist Review: Leib Goldkorn--musician,
composer, and blunderer--first appeared in The
Steinway Quartet more than 20 years ago. Now a
ripe 97, Goldkorn seeks escape from old sorrows
and his invalid wife in smutty magazines and
phone sex, and by recounting his wartime
adventures that revolve around his attempts to
stage his anti-Nazi opera. Epstein, a master
satirist, infuses both time frames with great
manic energy, drawing on two deeply felt but
emotionally oppositional themes: his love of
movies and his anguish over the Holocaust. These
passions shaped his last novel, Pandemonium
(1997), and work a surreal magic here as Goldkorn
finds himself enthralled by the champion ice
skater turned movie star, Sonja Henie; the fiery
Carmen Miranda; and the athletic water goddess,
Esther Williams. His wild escapades also involve
run-ins with Hitler, Darryl Zanuck, Arturo
Toscanini, and the New York Times book critic,
Michiko Kakutani. Goldkorn is a man of unflagging
ardor and thwarted dreams, and his creator is a
gutsy and gifted writer who reminds us that
comedy is just the flip side of tragedy.
