Petulia liked animals, especially pigs, because they had wobbly noses.
Tiffany quite liked animals too, but no one except other animals liked
animals as much as Petulia.

Subject: re: Looking for book/Girl disguises self as boy during Civil
War
Hello Fiction-L:
You came through for me last time...looking for help again.
I have a patron looking for a book that she read when she was a junior
in high school, 1979.
She said she thought it might be titled ONCE IN A LIFETIME but doesn't
know exactly where she got that from, that's just what keeps popping
into her head whenever she thinks about this book.
She said the premise of the story is about a girl who disguises herself
as a boy during the Civil War. She meets up with a slave and there is a
wagon and coffin involved for concealment but the patron couldn't
remember who was in the coffin in the wagon although she thinks it might
have been the slave.
She also remembers a white cover with some pink on it. (Ah, my
favorite!)
Does this ring a bell with anyone? Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I don't remember the slave/coffin connectiuon, but Kathleen
Woodiwiss wrote a great Civil War romance about a girl who disguises
herself as a black(?) boy during the war. It is called Ashes in the
Wind.
