I'm not a children's librarian, either, but I do read some children's books,
and am well-acquainted with others. Some titles you might want to consider
for that age group:
THE STAR-SPANGLED SECRET, by K. M. Kimball.
Aladdin/Simon & Shuster, 2001
A "history-mystery" set in Baltimore, against the background of the
bombardment of Ft. McHenry toward the end of the War of 1812.
THE SECRET OF THE RED FLAME, by K. M. Kimball
Aladdin/Simon & Shuster, Summer 2002
Another "history-mystery", this one set in the Polish community of
Chicago, set against the background of the Chicago Fire.
BEAUTY by Robin McKinley
A gorgeous retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
DINOTOPIA by James Gurney
I don't know for sure if this is right for your age group, but my
"kiddie lit" friend is panting to get a copy. And of course, the TV
Dinotopia debuts very soon on ABC.
Binnie Syril Braunstein
Romance novelist/former librarian/and probably a bit out of her depth

Some kids are crazy over the Lemony Snicket books: A Series of Unfortunate Events:
The Bad Beginning
The Reptile Room
The Wide Window
The Miserable Mill
The Austere Academy
The Erstaz Elevator
The Vile Village
The Hostile Hospital.
You will also want to inclue the Harry Potter Series.

REC'D: 5/8/02, 3:41 PM
Free to Dream-Audrey Osofsky-a biograohy of Langston
Hughes geared towards children,
Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World: the
Extraordinary True Story of Shackleton and the
Endurance-Jennifer Armstrong-a nice account of
Shackleton's Antarctic expedition geared towards
children,
A Night to Remember-Walter Lord-begins when the
lookout nest spots the iceberg and goes from there;
not a terribly difficult read,
The New You-Kathleen Leverich-a thirteen-year old girl
meets her twenty-six year old self in an abandoned
hair salon,
Fair Weather-Richard Peck-a rural Illinois family
travels to Chicago to experience the Wolrd's Columbian
Exposition,
Seedfolks-Paul Fleischman-a community turns a vacant
lot into a garden.
I deleted the list and these are the only titles I can
remember. I hope these work out for you.
Truly yours,
Alex
