"Literature of Exhaustion" published in the
Atlantic Monthly in August, 1967 and the
follow-up to it,
"Literature of Replenishment" published in the
Atlantic Monthly in January, 1980.
If anyone knows where to find it online it would
be greatly appreciated.

Both essays are published in the following book of essays by Barth:
The Friday Book (1984)
Essays and Other Nonfiction
281 pages.
Pictured trade paperback edition published by Johns Hopkins University Press.
I found the info using a google search on the title of the first essay.

Northern Light (www.NorthernLight.com) indexes both free and for-pay articles
(about $2.00 apiece). Searching is always free.
That's where I go when I can't find what I need at the library.
