Wow, I just read one. It was a romance book and it was. . . . . Too Much
Temptation by Lori Foster. It is definitely the newer, more erotic kind of

Just started reading the Kathleen Taylor South Dakota mysteries. WARNING:
First book in series is nearly impossible to get! Tory Bauer is "widowed,
over forty, and somewhat exceeding the surgeon general's weight guidelines"
(from the back cover of "Funeral Food"). Excellent portrayal of small town
life (and I mean real small towns with fewer than a thousand people -- not
fake small towns of tens of thousands).

Another thought: Agnes Nitt, the latest addition to the three-person
Lancre witchs' coven in Terry Pratchett's DISCWORLD series, is a
very large young woman. She's appeared in several recent Pratchett
books, but the one focusing on her is MASQUERADE, where in her
pre-witch career she's attempting a career in opera.

Lexy Connor, a software consultant living in Boulder, Colorado hits the road
for both coasts when Tally, a young friend calls terrified in the night with
a story that sets Lexy on the trail of TallyΉs birth parents. When Tally
arrives at a hotel to meet a woman who had contacted her about information
on her birth parents she finds a murder scene and turns to Lexy. Lexy does
some of her research in Westchester high school libraries and some in a high
tech newspaper morgue and comes up with some good clues.
ItΉs about time we had an old fat female sleuth with sex appeal. Lexy is a
force to be reckoned with. While this first mystery is a little predictable
it offers an enjoyable ride and hopes for future adventures featuring this
likable sleuth.

My review of this one was in the June 2000 Booklist. The debauched villagers
try to placate what they think is a dragon with a virgin sacrifice.
Gwendolyn is the only one fitting the criteria. "Her sharp wit and tongue as
well as her insecurity over her ample proportions have left her happily an
old maid." Fortunately the dragon turns out to be a gorgeous man who is
smitten by Gwendolyn and "he locks Gwendolyn in a tower room and pampers her
with lovely clothes, lots of books, and palate-pleasing delicacies."

The Sterkarm Handshake, by Susan Price. From Booklist:
A rapacious twenty-first-century British company
builds a Time Tube to the sixteenth-century Scottish-
English border, where a handshake supposedly seals a
deal that the Sterkarm clan will not attack the survey
teams. Since most Sterkarms are left-handed, a right-
handshake means Old Toorkild has no intention of
keeping his word and the teams are considered fair
game. Linguist Andrea Mitchell [a "larger woman"],
sent to live with and study the Sterkarms, gets caught
in the middle. She likes the Sterkarms, who have
welcomed her as a guest, and she has even fallen in
love with Toorkild's handsome son. But she still feels
a responsibility for the safety of her colleagues when
they are captured. When the Sterkarms realize that
their way of life is threatened, the battle becomes
brutal and spreads into the twenty-first century.
Humor leavens some of the violence and
characterizations help highlight differences between
modern and early cultures in a gripping story, filled
with realistic details of sixteenth-century life in
all its harshness. Time-slip elements notwithstanding,
this is more for action-adventure buffs than sf fans.

While Ellie tries to get her potentially prize-winning
pumpkin to put on two hundred more pounds, she
struggles with her own weight, using her sense of
humor to get through the struggles of life.

Both are YA novels, but might appeal nonetheless. (I

Lulu (I think that's her name) in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet
Evanovitch is a large black woman. While not the heroine, she
contributes her share of humor and mayhem in each book.

A Whole Lot of Love by Justine Davis -- a Silhouette Desire from, I think,
last year some time.

It's also a very sympathetic novel about Alzheimers (no, the larger heroine
isn't the victim).

I don't think that anyone has mentioned Mary Alice, Patricia Anne's sister in Anne George's "Southern Sisters" series. The series started with MURDER ON A BAD HAIR DAY and ended recently with MURDER BOOGIES WITH ELVIS. Someone did mention Agnes Nitt of the Witches series on the Discworld, but there's also the wife of Commander Vimes, Lady Sybil Ramkin, who is quite large and of very good breeding. There's also Lulu, Stephanie Plum's inept sidekick (and former ho) in the series by Janet Evanovich.

I don't know if this one has been mentioned but Wishes by Jude Deveraux
features a larger woman as the heroine who thinks she's not beautiful
because of her weight (and because her family including her father who
doesn't want to lose his housekeepr and her vain sister who wants to marry
well and knows that her sister is actually better looking tell her this.)
but the hero of the story (whose mother is an opera singer) thinks she's the
far more attractive sister. There's also a "fairy godmother" involved who
thinks that all life's problems will be solved by making the heroine lose
weight. But in the end, the hero prefers her exactly the way she is. (I
really like that part!!)

Jen -
I've read the Jane Austen books, and I never in my mind saw them as
being plus size women. The mother in P&P, maybe, but not the daughters,
and certainly not Elizabeth. Also there is no mention of them being
plump or any other euphemism. If it was me, I wouldn't include them in
the list.
