McGregor and Ethan Lewis's book Conundrums for the long weekend:
England, Dorothy L. Sayers and Lord Peter Wimsey is a wonderful

The Valdemar Companion, Mercedes Lackey
The World of Shannara, Brooks & Patterson
Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, Nye & McCaffrey
Atlas of Pern, Karen Wynn Fonstad
The Atlas of the Dragonlance World, Fonstad
The Darkover Concordance, Breen
I believe there's also a concordance/companion to Louis L'Amour's "Sackett"
series.
I don't know whether you would count these, but some fictional detectives
have had "biographies" written of them. Sherlock Holmes and Nero Wolfe come
to mind.

With Peter Jackson's three-part movie version of "The Lord of the Rings"
in mid-release, there are any number of books about Middle Earth
available, many of which might be wonderful for your list. In addition
to the ones mentioned in the initial query, I might suggest Karen Wynn
Fonstad's "Atlas of Middle Earth" and David Day's "Tolkien Bestiary".
The recent book "Meditations on Middle Earth" collects essays on Middle
Earth by various other writers (Ursula Le Guin, Orson Scott Card, etc.)
Heck, there are even competing musical versions of Tolkien's songs.
Donald Swann published some song arrangements years ago under the title
"The Road Goes Ever On", and others have not only set them to music, but
recorded the results (www.flowinglass.com/avalon/disc.html,
www.tolkienensemble.dk).
Stretching the original query a bit further, but not quite violating the
proscription against movie books: anyone who enjoyed Mervyn Peake's
"Gormenghast" books, or the recent BBC miniseries based on them, might be
interested in "The Art of Gormenghast", a description of how the BBC
brought the castle and its denizens to television.
Perhaps I've wandered afar from the initial query. So be it; the road,
after all, goes ever on and on.

And then, of course, there are multitudes of STAR WARS-related books...I'm
sure every library that stocks the SW paperbacks (or the hardcovers) does a
brisk business in them.
