Mary K's email madde me curious what sort of levels of circualtion other
libraries have for fiction versus nonfiction. I was looking at our figures
for April 2002, and in the adult print collection 49.5% of the circualtion
was fiction and 50.5% was nonfiction. What do you all find when you look
at circ figures? I'll compile a list if folks would like.

Depends on the season -- June, July, August, high adult fiction, low
nonfiction
September through May -- about 50/50 or slightly higher figures for
nonfiction during November and April (midterm & final papers).
The figures in juvenile don't match since it doesn't matter what season --
the books on dinosaurs, insects and snakes will always be checked out!

I'd recently run a report of our circ stats from July 01- March 02. Our
adult print figures are as follows:
54% Fiction, 46% Nonfiction. This includes renewals as well as circ stats.
The renewals for NF are higher, perhaps because even with multiple copies,
most of the big fiction titles are on hold - barring renewals.

For 2001, our adult book circulation was 40.3% nonfiction and 59.7% fiction.

The multi-year trend is interesting. For many years, we had circulated
more nonfiction than fiction. Since the mid-1990s, fiction circulation has
been increasing while nonfiction has been decreasing, and in 1999 fiction
surpassed nonfiction for the first time. 5 years ago, nonfiction
circulation was 54.8% and fiction 45.2%.

In my small, semi-rural library in Wake County, North Carolina, fiction
accounted for 65% of the adult print circulation, with nonfiction only 35%!

I think it may largely depend on the type/size of the library. My branch is
2 miles from our main library. The collection is deliberately slanted
towards popular materials. In 2001, adult books constituted 39% of my total
circulation. That broke down to 65% fiction and 35% nonfiction.

I’ll agree with Karen in that it may largely depend on the type/size of
the library. My library serves a town with a population of 4,638 and we
are abutted to a city of 60,000+ people with their own public library
just 5 miles and the same number of minutes away. Since becoming fully
automated November 01, adult books constituted 53% of my total
circulation. That broke down to 79.75% fiction and 20.25% nonfiction.

Last year Main circulated 60.5% nonfiction and 39.5% fiction. At the
branches, fiction predominated, ranging from 72.4% down to 55.8%.
System-wide we had a 50/50 split.

Based on figures for the 2000/2001 fiscal year, adult fiction circulation was
44.3% while adult nonfiction circulation was 55.7%. This roughly corresponded
to our adult book budget breakdown--41.6% for fiction and 58.4% for non
fiction.

Our adult fiction circulation (hardcover and
paperbacks) is 46.6% of the book circulation in
Cambridge. The Main Library fiction circ. is 43.4% of
its book circulation and circulation for our six
branches is 58.8% of their book circulation.

One source I use in my ordering process is the best
sellers lists from Amazon, to see what people are
actually putting money on! Amazon seems to show
the ripples pretty fast when a title captures the
public's imagination. The lists are also useful as
guides for non-fiction ordering.

There have been lots of interesting threads recently!
