Fantasy fiction- Characters chased through the center of the earth

I have a customer looking for a fantasy book she read
a couple of years ago. It featured a female lead
character with two male sidekicks -- one in a cape and
one "big and ugly". They were chased and go through
the center of the earth along the roots of the Mother
Tree. When they come out they organized their own
settlement in the mountains. Any ideas? I am truly
stumped.
Thanks so much,

This might be the trilogy by Elizabeth Haydon that begins with Rhapsody:
child of blood, and continues with Prophecy: child of earth and
Destiny:child of the sky. The main protagonist is female, there are two
other male characters (I don't remember the cape part, but one of them is a
sort of an ogre) and they do travel under the earth using the roots of the
mother tree of all life, or something like that.
