I am sorry to use this list for a question that is not
fiction related.
I need some imput and you are the only resource I
have.
This week software was loaded on our network that
allows us to
Monitor what is being viewed on our public computers.
Although we haven't been informed of any other use, it
logically follows that all computers in the library
will/can be viewed by
senior staff. We know that viewing employees'
computers is legal. What about the public not knowing
they are subject to monitoring?
How are other libraries handling this? Frankly, we,
the staff, feel
Violated and there is a big loss of trust. Sort-of "if
they don't trust us, we don't trust them." We are a
small library - staff of 14 people.
Also, many of us are not comfortable with the idea of
checking to see what patrons are accessing?isn?t this
against what
ALA stands for?privacy and all that? Help us to
understand the rational please!!!

Our county has an official statement that public computers are for public
business and that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in them.
Therefore computer records may be monitored or inspected. My understanding
is that this is both legal and common practice.
