This evening, as I was describing to my husband the plot of the
book I'm reading (The bones in the attic, by Robert Barnard), it brought
to his mind a book his teacher read to his high school English class. In
it, an older couple bought a manor house in England, and discovered a
trunk in the attic with a carefully dismantled set of bones packed in it.
They were interested & excited to find their very own mystery, and set
off on a series of adventures (each chapter was an adventure in itself)
to solve it. Turns out the bones belonged to a midget, who was part of a
traveling circus and used them as part of his act. And on the inside of
the skull was engraved the date & place of purchase, which the detectives
had missed altogether!
Richard says that this class was about 1962-63, and the book was
about 10 or 15 years old, and was the teacher's own copy. When I asked
if it was by a well-known author (thinking of Agatha Christie), he said
he didn't know, but it was very well written.
Any ideas? I've been bragging about this list, it'll be interesting
to see what we come up with!
