I thought you might like something to play with in case it's a slow night on
the desk. I have a patron who would like to find a spy thriller that
features a woman as the protagonist... not the girlfriend. She was also
very clear that she was a spy/espionage story and has no interest in women
detectives or private investigators. He has recently finished and enjoyed
Ludlum's Bourne series, but now she wants a lady in the lead.

Two authors came to mind when I read your request - Maureen Tan and her two "Jane" books and "Masquerade" by Gayle Lynds. The Tan books feature a British spy who tries to retire under the alias Jane in the U.S. but can't and the Lynds book is about a woman who they try to brainwash into becoming an assassin/spy. Of course, the Gilman books with Mrs. Pollifax have a women spy but they may not have enough action for your patron.

Margaret Duffy's Ingrid Langley books feature a novelist who teams with her spy husband. The first in the series is A MURDER OF CROWS. Michael Spicer also has a series that features a woman undercover agent. The first in this series is A COTSWOLD MURDER.

Hiya, Chapple.
They're pretty rare, but here's a fun
series:
Mareen Tan's 'Run Jane Run' (2000) and 'AKA Jane'
(2001). Another is 'The Cutout' (2001) by
Francine Matthews - the sequel ('The Secret
Agent') is due out this June. And Clare McNab's
series with Agent Denise Cleever, including
'Death Understood' and 'Out of Sight'.
There's always Charlie, the title character of
John LeCarre's 'Little Drummer Girl,' although
she isn't exactly a hero. And Dev Stryker's
(psued.) Amelia Pierce books, including
Deathright and A Wilderness of Mirrors.

Two names spring to mind: Dorothy Gilman's wonderful Mrs. Pollifax, who starts
her career as a CIA courier in The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax, and Helen
MacInnes. Two of her espionage thrillers with women protagonists are Ride a
Pale Horse, and The Snare of the Hunger, at least according to the description
in an older Fiction Catalog. Looking forward to the list.

These are both nonfiction -- Sisterhood of spies: the women of the OSS, by
Elizabeth McIntosh and The spy wore red: my adventures as an undercover
agent in World War II, by Aline, Countess of Romanones. Worth a try.

I would second the nonfiction suggestion of SISTERHOOD OF SPIES and THE SPY
WORE RED - Aline Romanones also wrote two sequels, THE SPY WENT DANCING and
THE SPY WORE SILK (this last one wasn't as good as the first two). Two
other titles: CAST NO SHADOW by Mary Lovell, the true story of Betty Pack
which was fictionalized in CROSSING BY NIGHT, a previous novel suggestion,
and MONICA: HEROINE OF THE DANISH RESISTANCE by Christine Sutherland. The
novel ENIGMA by Robert Harris had a central female character, although the
"main" character is male.

Might your patron be interested in nonfiction accounts of female spies,
such as Mata Hari?

Or American Civil War-era spies such as Belle Boyd, Emma Edmonds, or
"Crazy Bet" (Elizabeth) van Lew?

There are some great stories there, like the time that Belle Boyd was
captured by the Federals, but persuaded her military guard to propose
marriage and switch sides. Or the time she shot a rude Union soldier who
had entered her family's house in search of "secesh flags".

Evelyn Anthony is an author of espionage/suspense I enjoyed. Several of
her books dealt with female spies, one of whom, Davina Graham appeared in
four books, the first of which is The Defector. They are out of
print but should be available via ILL.

For the sake of completeness, though it's not something I'm
recommending...

There were at least two soft-core porno pb serieses about female
spies: THE LADY FROM L.U.S.T. series by "Rod Gray" and the
CHERRY DELIGHT series by "Glen Chase." Both were late
sixties/early seventies. The former was published by Tower
Books and the later by Leisure Books; each ran to some
15 to 25 volumes.

This message also mentions a one-shot pb in same genre, THE GIRL
FROM B.U.S.T.-- I don't know that one.

Both "authors" were house names, but the main author under
both names for both serieses was the prolific Gardner F. Fox,
who wrote scads of stuff under various names, including a lot

Another author of this kind is Ann Bridge, who wrote the Julia Probyn
novels. I think some of her non-series books are also about lady spies.
