conspiracy themes

I'm looking for titles with conspiracy themes. One of our patrons has read
through the X-files and now wants to dip into something a little more
challenging. I pushed them *Club Dumas* and Eco. Anything set 17th,
18th, 19th centuries with an occult/conspiracy slant would be sure to
please.
Thanks,
JJ

The Magic Circle -- Katherine Neville
The Canaan Legacy -- Michael A. Kahn
Angels and Demons -- Dan Brown
The Covenant of the Flame -- David Morrell
The Book of Q -- Jonathan Rabb
And some good paranoid conspiracy titles in the X-Files vein:
Firestarter -- Stephen King
Hunting Down Amanda -- Andrew Klavan
Dark Rivers of the Heart -- Dean Koontz
Waiting -- Frank M. Robinson
Nobody's Safe -- Richard Steinberg

A classic conspiracy novel (trilogy, actually):
Author: Shea, Robert.
Title: The illuminatus! : trilogy / Robert Shea and Robert Anton
Wilson.
Published: New York, N.Y. : Dell Pub., c1975.
Description: 805 p. ; 21 cm.
Contributors: Wilson, Robert Anton, 1932-
Other titles: The eye in the pyramid.
The golden apple.
Leviathan.
ISBN: 0440146887
---------------------------
though that's 20th-century setting. Wilson alone, though, also did
the "Historical Illuminatus" trilogy, consisting of THE EARTH WILL
SHAKE / THE WIDOW'S SON / NATURE'S GOD. All, unfortunately, out of
print paperbacks and hard to find. (I believe a reprint is promised.)
Many old gothic novels have conspiracy themes. One of the more
extreme is HORRID MYSTERIES by Carl Grosse (1796). I rather enjoyed
it, but I suspect most wouldn't. William Godwin's CALEB WILLIAMS
is more accessible (and shorter, and better written), and Maria
Monk's AWFUL DISCLOSURES (which she claimed was nonfiction) is more
lurid and lively (and ridiculous, and an anti-Catholic polemic that
might do the Klan proud...).

Three you might include (all 20th century)
The Tranquillity Alternative by A Steele. It's Science Fiction since it
partly takes place on the moon, but a good thriller
The Descent by Jeff Long
Overseer by Jonathan Rabb (whose other book was mentioned earlier)
