Hi all,
I am hoping that someone will recognize this...
Patron says that he read this book in the mid-1950's.

The story takes place in France(he thinks) and main character was a grubby
person with tattered clothes...no one would speak to him/interact with him,
until he found an officer's uniform on the street. The patron believes that
it was a police officer's uniform, once he cleaned it up and began wearing
it...everyone said hello to him and spoke kindly to him.

Patron says that he thought the title could be the "Clothes make the man",
however it could simply be the theme of the story!

Any takers????
