All the Harry Potter books. I, myself, would listen to any juvenile fiction

Try Raptor Red by Robert T. Bakker. A great recreation of a dinosaur's
experience from the dinosaur's point of view--like the very best of Nature
or the Discovery Channel that everyone can listen to and learn from on the
way to grandmother's house or your summer vacation. Not sentimental or

One that comes to mind for teens and adults is "The Girl Who Loved Tom
Gordon".

Audio Bookshelf has a series rated "Family Listening" with suggested age
levels for children listeners. Our patrons have always turned to these
when looking for a "book" suitable for all ages for a long family trip.

I loved "Summer of My German Soldier" by Bette Green as an adult. Almost
anything by Jean Craighead George should appeal, also.
"Catherine, Called Birdie" by Karen Cushman and "Bud Not Buddy" by

All of the Harry Potter books are great on audio
and suitable for all ages, as are the HOBBIT and
the LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY. My family enjoyed
SEABISCUIT by Hillenbrand, and the Bill Bryson
books, especially A WALK IN THE WOODS, although
there are a few expletives that some parents
might find offensive. The Seamus Heaney audio of
Beowulf is very good, his accent really adds
something special to a superlative translation.

My brain has been on vacation -- and it didn't take me with it...
Has anyone mentioned Freddy the Pig...these are very entertaining and are
good for family listening. One evening last summer a brother and sister came
in looking for Harry Potter on tape, ours were checked out--they didn't want
to be placed on the hold list so they were looking for other tapes to check
out--and they were delighted to find some Freddy's they hadn't heard before.

I heartily second the motion for the Harry Potter books--they were
FANTASTIC to listen to! Also, any of Jean Craighead George's books--the
Julie of the Wolves series, or My Side of the Mountain. Also, any of Paul
Fleischman's books, especially Seedfolks and Whirlagig. Other great ones
are "The Watson's go to Birmingham" and "Bud, not Buddy" by Christopher
Paul Curtis, who won A Newbery Honor Award and Newbery Award respectively.
Oh yes, I just remembered some other good ones--Thwonk, and others by Joan
Bauer and most of Caroline Cooney's books. I think this is enough for a

My daughter (an extremely literate first grader) and I have enjoyed :

Absolutely, Harry Potter. I think Jim Dale is amazing.

No one has yet mentioned the BBC radio productions of the Narnia Chronicles.

I've also been asked to add Freddy the Pig.

The Misty of Chincoteague series by M. Henry.

Recorded Books has done alot of interesting things that have made long car
journeys tolerable. We are trying to remember the name of one that's about
a 14 year old farm boy who gets picked to be a junior astronaut and forms a
friendship by ham radio with a Masai boy from Africa. This made a big
impression. I am also more than willing to revisit books out of my
childhood, like the "Phantom Tollboth"

(I thought I was the only one who thought of _long_ stories on tape for
children. It's nice to know there are others out there.)

The Cat Who series goes well with our teens and adults who like the
lighter mysteries, Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage, while very long
"read" like fiction, I didn't think I would enjoy it or my husband but we
were pleasantly surprised (if only history was taught as good as he writes
it!).

Adults are enjoying the Harry Potter searies as well as the kids.

Last year I took a 7 and 10 year old to San Antonio and we listed to one
of the Hank the Cow Dog tapes and I enjoyed it as much as thegrandkids,
it was laugh out loud funny and I loved the cat in it.

C. S. Lewis' Chronicles of Nardia would be good, as would Twain's works.
If the adults are into fanasty than some of Lackey's or McCafferty's tapes
would be good.

_Dinotopia_ is a great slightly abridged audio tape. My niece and nephew,
then 4 and 14, followed along in the lushly illustrated book. My sister and
I enjoyed the story as well.

I am responding really late on this, but I just listened to PEACE LIKE A
RIVER by Leif Enger, and I thought it was a great story, had a terrific
