OK, troops, here comes a list of vague clues. See if you can come up with a
title.

* written by a 20th century male author with a common-sounding name
* set in 19th century
* protagonist is originally from the South but is now located in NY
* he is haunted by his possible complicity in the death of his sister which
may have caused him to attempt suicide, only to be discovered by a neighbor
* the murder/crime takes place in a writer's colony

Except for the time period mentioned, the following book fits all of the
criteria:

Instruments of Night by Thomas H. Cook...a really wonderful book
