Help. I have been given the task of purchasing a selection of graphic
novels
for the adult collection of the library. No sex, nudity, etc... I know
nothing about this genre. Does anyone know of a good source for titles,
reviews, purchasing? Also if any library has a collection, how do you
catalog
them? and, do you shelve them with the rest of the collection or do they
have
their own section?
I would appreciate any help you can give me.

The author is a librarian in Ohio. Also Hennepin County did a presentation
at PLA on graphic novels. I didn't get to go :(, but someone from there
might be able to make some recommendations.

You might want to contact Laura Bruggeman at the
Downers Grove (IL) Public Library. They have a LARGE
adult graphic novel collection -- I think >500 titles -
and she's done workshops on the topic (she got us
started on ours). Their phone # is 630-960-1200, and
their director's email is [removed]@downersgrovelibrar
We catalog our titles as regular books and shelve them
accordingly, while also listing them in the subj. cat.
under the form headings GRAPHIC NOVELS and GRAPHIC
NONFICTION so they can be found by genre. The kids
seem to have no trouble locating them.
We purchase ours from Diamond Comic Distributors
(phone# 800-452-6642,email [removed]@dimanondcomics.com)
or from amazon.com (they have tons of titles) or from a
local comic book store. The latter has found us good
used copies of a couple of titles we really wanted that
were o.p., and amazon will do the same.

"Superheroes and Beyond: Why Comics and Graphic Novels Belong in Your
Library" program from last Saturday at PLA:

I was lucky to have had a co-worker stop by the program and he brought back
many other items such as catalogs, posters, and samples of some graphic
novels along with the handouts. These other items, of course, are not
available off the PLA website but the resource list and the glossary look
very useful.

I might want to point out that *some* graphic novels do indeed contain sex
and nudity. Not all comic books are the ones that we remember when we were
kids. Manga (Japanese comic books) especially can, depending on the series,
be very "adult" in nature. In Japan, manga is a big cultural thing with many
graphic books on special topics ranging from what we think of as comic books
to cooking and business. There are, also, certain lines of American comic
book publishers such as Dark Horse that are also adult in nature. I'm sure,
simply, that Carrie's library didn't find the more "adult" books to be
appopriate for their situation. We just started carrying graphic novels
here, ourselves, so these postings have been quite helpful.

I think "graphic novel" is a bit of a pain of a term anyway because you're
right it does give you that impression. I was, however, afraid that people
might think that all of these books are free from "adult" content and they
are not. :-) I didn't think you were reprimanding her and I hope I didn't
sound like I was doing it in reverse.
As for the term, in comic book land, they call the ones we get TPB or trade
paperbacks, but that obviously isn't useful either because that's a common
publishing term.
Interestingly enough, there's a letter to editor in the March 15 LJ that
mentions graphic novels. Anyone know the URL for Diamond's Bookshelf, it's
not mentioned in the letter, there's supposed to be monthly reviews there.
Voice of Youth Advocates also has a column called "Graphically Speaking."

For reviews click on the 'Reviews' book icon on the left side of the screen
and then click on the individual covers to see the information (including a

terms (which compliments the glossary from the PLA program) under a
